My kit was so pretty this past month, with the Thrift Shop Collection. I used an embellishment on this layout which has been popular the past several months, the pinwheel.

I had often looked at these, a simple folding technique, and wished I could replicate them successfully. I’d tried to score the lines straight but couldn’t.

 Fast forward to several weeks ago when I finally got a Martha Stewart Score board. This tool is an absolute must, so easy to use and makes the perfect straight score line each and every time.

I created this card using leftovers from my kit and of course, my score board!

For this card, I’ve used 2 pinwheels, the larger one used a strip of paper 3cm wide and 20cm in length.  The smaller pinwheel was 2cm wide and about the same length as the first. 

My first tip is that you need to allow plenty of length. Score at a quarter of an inch all the way along your strip of paper. 

Concertina fold the entire strip making sure each fold is crisp. 

Using hot glue, join both ends of the strip and allow to set.

Again using the hot glue, attach the pinwheel to a backing piece of paper.  You won’t see this so you can use any scrap you have.  Allow the glue to set.  For the smaller pinwheel, I attached a small button over the top of the pinwheel. 

These look great layered, and by using the Score Board and a hot glue gun, you can make these embellishments in no time.  Of course, you can try using decorative scissors and punches along the outside edge of your pinwheel for a more intricate look.

Hi all, I’m here to share yet another flower step by step, using the beautiful satin pleated trim ribbon in this month’s kit.  You can see it on this layout : 

To begin with, you will need a 1-2 inch circle punch, some scrap carstock, a hot glue gun and your satin ribbon trim.  Make sure you always have a bowl of ice nearby when working with hot glue!!!  The bigger your circle punch, the bigger your flower will turn out.

Punch out your circle.

Apply a fair amount of hot glue to the centre of your circle then push the end of the trim into the glue and allow to set.

Working in sections of only an inch at a time, apply hot glue on the circle and wind the trim around the centre section, working your way slowly in sections, to the outside of the circle.  The closer each round of trim is, the more full your flower.  Continue until you have no more circle to apply glue. 

You will have a ‘tail’ of trim coming off your flower. Trim this close to the punched circle then hot glue any trim that is sticking out, to the back side of the circle. 

Next you will probably notice a small gap in the centre of your flower.  This is ok.  You can add a button or something to the centre or do what I did and add a litle more of the ruffle trim.  To do this, trim off an inch or so of the ribbon trim. 

Apply a line of hot glue to the bottom of the trim being careful not to burn yourself!

Carefully roll the trim to form a rosette. 

Add hot glue to the bottom of the rosetter then push it into the centre of your flower and hold in place until the glue has set. 

Your flower is ready to use on a card, layout or anything.  Another idea is to use a circle of felt or fabric and attach your flower to clothing or a bag – very cute for kid clothes!!!

I would love to see any versions of this flower.  You could also do this with ruffled lace… pretty!!

Today I want to show you a great little idea for a hiding a surprise in a card.  I originally saw this on a lot of blogs, using what is known as sweet treat cups.  Today though, we are going to recycle the packaging that our buttons come in to create these little bubbles to hide our secrets in.

You will need:

1 button packet (found in this months Full Tart), cut in half and trimmed

1 4×6 folded blank card

a 4×6 false front for your card

a 3×5 strip of cardstock

papers and embellishments from your kit

Begin by trimming back your button packet.  I cut mine in half then trimmed back each side so that it will sit flat. Attach double sided tape to the side with the raised plastic bubble as in this photo.

Take your false front of your card and adhere your background paper.

Measure your bubble and cut out an opening the same dimensions from the front of your card.  This can be anywhere on the front but try not to go too close to the edge.

Place your false front over the top of your folded card and trace the outline left by the opening you’ve cut away.  Now trim this on the front of the folded card, to a little smaller than the false front.  This will be where your hidden secrets come out of your card

Place your bubble into the opening on the false front, using the double sided tape to adhere it.

Place your strip of card over the opening of the folded card and trace around this.  This strip will be the ‘gate’ that closes off the secret pocket and keeps the secrets inside until its slid open.

Use flattish foam dots around the outside section of the card front and along the edge of where your strip will go.  Not too close – you want the strip to be able to move a little.  Now you can adhere your false front to your card and slide in your strip of paper to close the ‘gate’.  Don’t forget to attach a little tag or something at the top so its easy to slide the strip up and down.

Now embellish your front. You can completely hide the pocket or leave it out in the open, its up to you.  One side of the button packet is more raised than the other.  I found chocolates will fit into the bigger one where as things like prima or Maya road flowers will fit in the flat one.  What a great idea to tuck in some money for a birthday card   

You can see on these close ups, the dimension you get from the surprise bubble and look, a caramel dove chocolate poking out behind my motivet stamp !
