Masking…. it’s a trick, I guess, the experienced stamper takes for granted. Lots of our stamps in store come as stand alone characters and if you get a background or accessory stamp to match in, such as a fence, you will need to know how to mask your images. Here is a simple step by step photo guide to basic masking.

Begin by inking your image and stamping it out twice, once on your cardstock and a second onto paper.  Cut the paper shape out (I’ve done just the bottom half section as this is all I will need for the fence.

Using a repositionable adhesive (the xyron is good for this) run your image that you’ve cut from paper through the machine.

Peel off so that the back is sticky.  I also then apply the sticky back to my clothing a few times, making it less sticky.  You want it to be able to stay in place on card but not stick so much that your cardstock might tear.

Place your image directly over the top of your cardstock image, press down firmly so no paper edges are sticking up.

Next, prepare your fence or accessory stamp.  Mine was new so I had to trim the rubber back, close to the edges.

Ink up your fence and stamp directly over the top of your covered up image. Press firmly.

Carefully lift the stamp then slowly peel off your mask.  Voila!  A masked stamped image!!!

Colour in and add to a card!

This is what I call a party pinwheel:

Step 1
Start with a square of double sided paper. The size isn’t crititcal – this one is about 4 inches.

Step 2
Cut along the diagonal toward the centre of the square. Stop about 1 cm before the centre.

Step 3
Punch a hole in the centre of the square, and on the right hand corner of each triangular flap you’ve just cut:

Now’s the time to bring out all of those daggy brads we all bought by the hundred when we were just starting out. These I mean:

What were we thinking?! Anyway, they can be used here because they’ll be completely hidden from view. Poke the brad legs up through the centre hole:

Step 5
Now feed the hole on each triangular flap onto the brad legs:

Step 6
Spread those brad legs to hold everything in place:

Step 7
Now cover up the daggy brad legs. I’ve used a button here, and because that didn’t seem enough, I tied twine through it and into a bow:

The embellishment is now ready to be placed on a card or layout.

Step 1
Cut a piece of patterned paper 14 x 9 cm.

Step 2
Using the decorative edge on the Best Thing Ledger Girl paper, trace the shape onto the back of the piece:

and cut out to make a tag shape:

Step 3
Stitch some polka dot paper to the card front using a zig zag stitch:

Step 4
Adhere some of the tassel trim over the tag shape. Don’t glue down the top of the tag just yet:

Attach one of the stickers to a scalloped circle punched from some of the brown patterned paper in the kit:

Step 6
Punch a small circle from the brown paper, adhere to the top of the tag and punch a hole through it. Thread some of the green pom-pom trim through the hole and tie a knot:

Step 7
Take a piece of the Notebook Page card and adhere it on an angle to the front of the card. Put the decorative frame sticker on some brown patterned paper and cut a small border around the sticker. Attach this to the card with mounting tape to add dimension. Place the round flower sticker with some mounting tape on top of a couple of leaves on the side of this frame sticker.

Step 8
The card is now complete:

When it comes time to give it away, all I need to do is add the sentiment with either a stamp or a rub on.

My kit was so pretty this past month, with the Thrift Shop Collection. I used an embellishment on this layout which has been popular the past several months, the pinwheel.

I had often looked at these, a simple folding technique, and wished I could replicate them successfully. I’d tried to score the lines straight but couldn’t.

 Fast forward to several weeks ago when I finally got a Martha Stewart Score board. This tool is an absolute must, so easy to use and makes the perfect straight score line each and every time.

I created this card using leftovers from my kit and of course, my score board!

For this card, I’ve used 2 pinwheels, the larger one used a strip of paper 3cm wide and 20cm in length.  The smaller pinwheel was 2cm wide and about the same length as the first. 

My first tip is that you need to allow plenty of length. Score at a quarter of an inch all the way along your strip of paper. 

Concertina fold the entire strip making sure each fold is crisp. 

Using hot glue, join both ends of the strip and allow to set.

Again using the hot glue, attach the pinwheel to a backing piece of paper.  You won’t see this so you can use any scrap you have.  Allow the glue to set.  For the smaller pinwheel, I attached a small button over the top of the pinwheel. 

These look great layered, and by using the Score Board and a hot glue gun, you can make these embellishments in no time.  Of course, you can try using decorative scissors and punches along the outside edge of your pinwheel for a more intricate look.
